Please do not use the original commodore 64 power supply unit (PSU). They are known to fail at any time and may destroy the computer. Instead, please use a modern version of a power supply made for Commodore 64. See my information page about C64 power supplies.

There are many methods for connection to a modern TV however I find component video cables and a DIN connector (like the one below) is the easiest and most affordable assuming your monitor or TV has component video input (yellow, red, white RCA type jacks).

Inserts into the audio-video jack and uses AV cables to connect to your monitor or television (with RCA type audio-video jacks).

Tips for maintaining and protecting your C64

*** In my opinion there are a few things that are fragile about retro electronics. Specific to the Commodore 64 please be aware:

1. The original external power supplies may fail and destroy your board. Instead use a modern version that have fail safes and/or a "power saver" function. see my page regarding power supplies.

2. The original cases are somewhat fragile mostly at the internal motherboard and keyboard standoffs and especially at the tab clips that hold the back together. If you must open your C64 take care to not break the back tabs. If you do break them they can be repaired or replaced with new tabs but care should be taken not to break the originals.

3. Always power off your C64 before loading or changing a cartridge or joystick. Take care not to touch the joystick or other ports as static electricity may harm the components.

4. Heat: C64 components such as the 5v regulator, VICii chip, and SID chip are known to get hot. For any product I have refurbished I have tested the voltages and temperatures on these on these chips and also installed heat sinks on them. However, it is not recommended to leave your C64 running for extended periods of time if you are not using it. These retro machines did not have auto shut down so please power off when not in use.

5. Power off and unplug the computer when not in use.

6. Avoid the introduction of static electricity to open ports and plugs. Refrain from touching them and turn the unit off when plugging or unplugging peripherals.

7. Avoid spills or moisture. Store in a temperature-controlled location without high humidity out of direct sunlight.
